AIRYLEE T. CHRISTIAN
HAMPTON – Airylee Thomas Christian, a lifetime resident of Hampton, died on Thursday, March 14, 1996, at Sentara Hampton General Hospital.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, King Street, where she served as a member of C.H. Jarvis Circle and worked with the JOY Group. She graduated from George P. Phenix High School, received a bachelor of science degree from Virginia State College and a master of arts from Hampton Institute. She also held a certificate of advanced study from the University of Virginia.
Having taught for a brief period in the Indianapolis public school system and eight years in the Hampton public schools, she retired from Norfolk State University after 22 years as associate professor of health and physical education. She was a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and affiliated with the Hampton Alumni Chapter, Hampton Chapter of Links Inc., Newport News Chapter of Pinochle Bugs, Chesapeake Chapter of Holidays and the Beau Brummell Wives.
She is survived by her devoted husband, John Christian; her three children, Sheena Christian-Howard and Richard Earl Christian, both of Hampton, and Calvin F. Thomas of Newark, N.J.; a brother, Calvin Y. Thomas of San Antonio, Texas; a son-in-law, Victor Howard and daughter-in-law, Stephanie Christian; five grandchildren, Brandon and Jade Howard and Ashley and Teeko Christian of Hampton, and Dominique McKoy of Newark, N.J.; and a host of relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at noon Monday at First Baptist Church, Hampton, by Dr. William D. Booth. Interment in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Christian will be placed in church by 10 a.m. Monday. Assemble at the church by 11:15 a.m. Monday. Viewing will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home with a Delta Sigma Theta Omega Omega service at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
