ANNA HARRIS ABEL COHEN
Anna Harris Abel Cohen died Tuesday, May 16, 2006. She was born Aug. 16, 1919 in Manila, Ark. She was the daughter of Rebecca Kaminsky, whose family was from New Jersey, and Joseph Alexander Abel from Vilna, Russia.
Anna was the third daughter in the family, after Ada and Harriet. When she was young, her parents moved from Manila, where she was born, to Wilmington, N.C., where she spent her youth and as a young adult.
Married to George Cohen on June 19, 1949, she then moved to Hampton, Va., where George had his business, Regent Stores, with his brother-in-law.
Survivors: loving husband, George Cohen; daughters, Holly Lynn Small, Wendy Cohen; son-in-law, Jere Small; and grandson Michael Abel Small.
Anna was active in her synagogue, B’nai Israel, serving as president of its sisterhood. She was president of Hadassah, a Brownie scout leader, and later, when she joined Rodef Sholom, worked in the kitchen during the bingo games.
She was a devoted daughter, and moved her parents to Virginia when they couldn’t manage alone in North Carolina.
Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. today, May 17, in Rosenbaum Cemetery.
