Bernard J. Apperson, Sr. of 3911 Shell Road, Hampton, died unexpectedly about 11:45 pm Friday night while visiting a daughter Mrs. R. E. Coleman of Annapolis, Md. He was 79.

A native of Orange, Apperson was a retired employee of B&L Transfer Co of Newport News. He was also a member of the Central Methodist Church and Helping Hand Bible Class.

In addition to Mrs. Coleman, survivors include four other daughters, Mrs. R. E. Brinkley of Hampton, with whom Apperson made his home, Mrs. George Wainwaring of Hampton, Mrs. B. H. Rittenhouse of Springfield, Va and Miss Bernice Apperson of Washington, and two sons, J. V. Apperson of Leesburg and B. J. Apperson Jr. of Hampton, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 4 pm Monday, at the Central Methodist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Jacob Mast, officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Harold Carpenter, Garven Hargette, John L. Simmons, Billie Teagle, Frank Welch and Vincent Ramsey. Members of the Helping Hand Bible Class will be honorary pallbearers.

  1. Mr. Apperson was my great great uncle. He passed away three years before my birth. I’ve never seen this before. Thank you for posting it.
