Accused of killing his brother-in-law

Brunswick County man surrenders to officers near Petersburg

(By Associated Press)

Petersburg, VA, Dec. 6 – After eluding Brunswick County officers since Sunday afternoon, when he is alleged to have shot and killed Charles Cannon, his brother-in-law, in a gunfight on the White Plains Road, James Lynch this afternoon surrendered himself to Constable Wright of Brodnax, thirty-five miles southwest of Petersburg, and was given a preliminary hearing this evening.

Lynch was held for the grand jury.

Before the killing of Cannon Saturday afternoon, it is alleged, he and Lynch met and engaged in a fight. They were separated, and Lynch, with several other men, proceeded up the road several hundred yards. Cannon and his brother followed and the shooting occurred.

It is said several others, besides Lynch, will be implicated.
