Charles N. Wells

Charles Newton “Jake” Wells, 67, died early yesterday at his home, 135 Sewall Ave., Hampton, after a long illness.

Mr. Wells was born July 8, 1889, in Dinwiddie County and retired about six years ago after 33 years service as a railway mail clerk.

He was a member of Phoebus Volunteer Fire Co., Hampton Lodge 1514, Loyal Order of Moose; Monitor Lodge 197, Masons and Khedive Temple of the Shrine.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Adelaide Tyler Wells; daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Monk of Richmond; four sons, C. Eric Wells of Alexandria, and R. Carlton Wells, Kenneth N. Wells and B. Macklin Wells, all of Hampton; four sisters, Mrs. Will Kohler and Mrs. J. Frank Swanson, both of Petersburg; Mrs. J. S. H Hoverstock of Carson and Mrs. C. C. Coble of Richmond, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM tomorrow in Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Taylor Willis, rector, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be P. C. Guilford, Warren Topping, John Kaiser, John Mugler, Emmett Bender and E. L. Clarke. The body will be taken from the residence to the church at 1 PM tomorrow.
