Claude Hamilton “Bill” Wilkerson, 75, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center. Born in Aquasco, Md., he had been a Hampton resident for 46 years.

Mr. Wilkerson was an Army veteran of World War II and had retired as a Sergeant 1st Class in 1964 with 21 years of service. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart with numerous other medals. Mr. Wilkerson then worked as a route salesman for several companies, including Continental Baking Co. and the Daily Press, with ten years of service.

His son, Robert P. Wilkerson, and parents, George F. and Mary H. Wilkinson, preceded him in death. Cherishing his memory will be his faithful and loving wife, Erna P. Wilkerson; two daughters, Peggy W. Keatts, and husband, Dwight, and Rosemary W. Thurston, and husband, Ron, all of Hampton; three sons, C.W. Wilkerson, and wife, Debby, of Chesterfield, Rick Wilkerson, and wife, Sheila, of Hampton, and Dan G. Wilkerson, and wife, Michele, of Gloucester; four brothers, Francis, Duke, Lee and Harry of Maryland; and 12 grandchildren and one great- granddaughter.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, July 3, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home by the Rev. John T. Ellington, with interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Veteran Affairs Medical Center and the “Palliative Care Support Program” for their loving care and support. Memorial contribution may be made to the East Hampton Baptist Building Fund, 1954 Long Green Lane, Hampton, VA 23663; or the Alzheimer’s Association Hampton Roads Chapter, 20 Interstate Corp. Center, Norfolk, VA 23502.
