NEWPORT NEWS – Cletus G. Cooper, 53, died Friday, June 15, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.

A native of Princeton, W.Va., he was a Peninsula resident for 28 years.

Mr. Cooper retired from the Hampton Police Department in 1986 after 26 years. He was a K-9 training officer for the department and was voted Police Officer of the Year in 1987 by the Exchange Club of Hampton and the Hampton Roads American Legion Post No. 31.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Freeman Cooper; one son, Brian K. Cooper of Newport News; his parents, Clyde G. and Elizabeth B. Cooper of Princeton; three sisters, Barbara Cooper of Fort Washington, Md.; Joyce Ailstock of Chesapeake and Dorothy Brock of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and one grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Monday in Peninsula Funeral Home by the Rev. Michael McCarron. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 4-5:30 p.m. today at Peninsula Funeral Home.
