CORNELIUS ‘CUP’ CARTER JR.
Cornelius “Cup” Carter Jr., 67, was called to eternal rest on Wednesday, April 13, 2005, in his home. His life began on March 19, 1938, the son of the late Otelia and Cornelius Carter Sr. He was a lifetime resident of the area and attended the Yorktown Public Schools. At an early age he accepted Christ into his life and joined Rising Sun Baptist Church in Lackey. “Cup” was self-employed and he retied from the Newport News Shipbuilding after many years of service.
He leaves to cherish his fond memories his former wife, Clara M. Carter; his daughters, Barbara Ann Bryant (Clayton) of Duncan, S.C., and Tammie Carter-Gilchrist (Derrick) of Yorktown; his stepsons, Jerry Vann (Barbara) and Henry Vann (Darlene); his brother, Robert Carter (Vernell) of Williamsburg; his uncle, Winslow Burke of Yorktown; his seven grandchildren; his three great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, in Colossian Baptist Church, Newport News, with the Rev. Peter Evans and Rev. Robert Allen Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Masonic Burial Grounds, Yorktown. Family and friends will assemble at 100 Cool Court, Apt. 20, Yorktown, by 2: 15 p.m. on Saturday. Professional service entrusted to the staff of Whiting’s Funeral Home, Williamsburg.
