NEWPORT NEWS – Cowles Spivey Weldon, 59, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.

A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., she had been a resident of the Peninsula for 34 years.

She was owner and office manager of General Counseling Services and retired in 1983 after 26 years.

She was member of Warwick United Church of Christ where she served as financial recording secretary and officer for more that 30 years. She was also Executive Secretary of the Hampton Roads Jaycees for more than 15 years.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. John I. Weldon Jr.; a daughter, Alicia Weldon Motley of Naples, Fla.; a son, John I. Weldon III of Wake Forrest, N.C.; two sisters, Helen Brown of Newport News, and Ellen Neal of Seminole, Fla.; a brother, Fred Spivey of Sunbury, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Warwick United Church of Christ by the Rev. Reuben S. Askew Jr.

The family will receive friends at the church after the memorial service.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Warwick United Church of Christ.
