DOROTHY P. COTTON
HAMPTON – Dorothy Palmer Cotton, a native of Newport News, died Monday, July 12.
Mrs. Cotton retired as a librarian from Newport News public schools and was a former teacher of library science at Hampton University. She was a graduate of Huntington High School and Virginia State University and received a master’s degree in library science from Columbia University.
A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Newport News chapter, Mrs. Cotton was a member of the Newport News chapter of The Girlfriends and the Hampton chapter of The Links Inc. She was a member of the Jol Eaves Bridge Club and the Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Cotton was a member of St. Cyprian Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Circle I and the Episcopal Council of Women.
Survived by five sisters, Evelyn Griffin and Ada Henry of Washington, D.C., Theresa Edgecombe-Aranha of Richmond, Nannette Johnson of Harrisburg, Pa., and Marion Taylor of Silver Spring, Md.; and two brothers, Augustus Palmer of Washington and Edward J. Palmer of Capital Heights, Md.
Viewing from noon to 8 today at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. Funeral 11 a.m. Friday at St. Cyprian Episcopal Church by the Father James Hall. Assemble at 114 E. Pembroke Ave. by 10:15 a.m. Body placed in church by 9 a.m. Burial in Hampton University Cemetery.
