Dudley R. Cowles, 97, of Toano, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at his home.

A lifelong resident of Toano, Mr. Cowles was known to almost everyone as “Nigs.” Born Oct. 15, 1904, Mr. Cowles was a son of the late Carter C. and Linda Ware Cowles. In 1917, Mr. Cowles began his education at the School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Va., and in June of 1927, he graduated.

Surviving are one sister, Harriet Cowles (Boo) Carter, six nieces and four nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two very special caregivers, Ada Martin and Bernice Thompson.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, from the Bucktrout Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Cowles Family Cemetery in Toano.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to James City Vol. Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 321, Toano, VA 23168.

Bucktrout of Williamsburg is in charge of arrangements.
