ELIZABETH COATES

RICHMOND – Elizabeth Christian Darlington Coates, 82, a former Newport News resident, died Thursday, March 18.

The native of Williamsburg retired after 50 years as a piano teacher. Mrs. Coates was co-owner and operator of Lawson Grocery Store in Newport News and was a member of Orcutt Baptist Church, Newport News.

She was a member of the Janet Randolph Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Survived by three daughters, Rosemary Cox of James Store, Johann Richardson of Hampton and Linda Jones of Scottsville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation at the home of Johann Richardson. Graveside service 3 p.m. Sunday in Greenlawn Cemetery, Newport News, by the Rev. J.D. Seward.

Memorials to Masonic Home of Virginia, 401 Nine Mile Road, Richmond 23223; or a favorite charity.

Arrangements by Phacker Bros. Funeral Home, Scottsville.
