HAMPTON – Ella J. Crowell quietly departed this life on Sunday, June 15, 1997, at Riverside Regional Hospital after an illness. She was born on May 3, 1935, to the late Henry and Ethel Bumpers.

She was a native of Garner, N.C., and had been a Peninsula resident for 42 years.

She is survived by her husband, Caronzo Crowell; one son, Charles L. Bumpers of Hampton; one goddaughter, Maycola Tia McLain; eight grandchildren; four great-gandchildren; six sisters, Sallie Bumpers and Shieley Wilson of Newport News, Louise Winters, Lela Collins Phillips of North Carolina, and Dorothy Bunch and Carolyn Jones of New Jersey; seven brothers, Wade Bumpers and Braxton Bumpers of Newport News, and Charlie Bumpers, Percy Bumpers, Glenn Bumpers, Luther Hinton and Garland Bumpers, all of North Carolina; and a host of nieces, newphews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel by Rev. Chris Carter. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.
