Mrs. J. H. Carter

Mrs. Elsie Wilbourne Carter, 61, of 25 Rutledge Road, Newport News, died Sunday in Riverside hospital after a brief illness.

A native of Nelson County, she had been a resident of Newport News for 50 years. She was a member of Chestnut Avenue United Methodist Church, Blair Blanton Bible Class, Women’s Society of Christian Science and Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

Survivors include her husband, Jewel Hansford Carter and three sisters, Mrs. Estelle W. Hamner of Hampton, Mrs. Mabel W. Curd of Fishersville and Mrs. Hallie W. Carter of Newport News.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday in Peninsula Funeral Home, Warwick Boulevard, by the Rev. James C. Weaver, pastor of Chestnut Avenue United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be her great-nephews, Clarence E. Roberts, Lewis Howard Curd Jr., Elwood S. Carter Jr., Keith Wilbourne, Sonney E. Burcher, Aubrey Carter Jr., Vance Carter and William C. Jenkins Jr.
