Evelyn T. Christian
Mrs. Evelyn T. (MaMa) Christian, a native and lifelong resident of Hampton, ended her earthly journey on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998. The daughter of the late Robert and Lavania Borden Tabb, Mrs. Christian was the wife of the late Prince H. Christian. They were blessed with 59 years of marriage and six children.
Educated in the public schools of Elizabeth City County, now Hampton, Mrs. Christian was a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 73 years. She was a member of the First Senior Choir, served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Pastor’s Aids Society, the Missionary Circle, Senior Citizens Club and was chairperson of the Pastor’s Anniversary Committee and the Hospitality Committee. Other activities included the Peninsula Missionary Council, the William R. Rattley Road Ahead for the Hungry, treasurer of the North Back River Road Civic Association and honorary grandmother for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Mrs. Christian was employed as a sales representative for Avon Products Inc. for 30 years, retiring in 1984, having been honored as the top salesperson in District 727 seven times and received the President’s Club Certificate for Achievement in 1983.
Mrs. Christian leaves to mourn their loss three daughters, Bernice Dillard, Lavania Copling and Sarah Copeland; two sons, Robert and James Christian, all of Hampton; one son-in-law, Allen Copeland; 26 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rosetta Veney, Pauline Hemingway and Josephine Lowery, all of Hampton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and supportive church family.
A homegoing service will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 2:30 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Assemble at 729 N. Back River Road by 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
