FRISSELL C. WALKER SR.
Frissell C. Walker Sr., 96, a native of Hampton, Va., entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 3, 2002. He was born in Phoebus, Va., on Oct. 3, 1905, to the late Edward and Mary Ellen Haymes Walker.
He attended the Whittier Training School and continued his education at Hampton Institute (University). He received his BS degree in building construction in 1935. He began his professional career by teaching in North Carolina for two years. Following that, he was employed by Hampton Institute (University), Naval Weapons Station and Fort Monroe for many years before retiring.
He was actively involved in the local chapter of the NAACP for many years. He worked diligently to get a school for Black children in Phoebus. The opening of the Robert R. Moton School in 1948 was the result of this effort.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Hamm Walker.
He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Sandra Walker Howell of Silver Spring, Md.; a son, Frissell Jr. of Berkeley, CA; two grandchildren Cynthia A. Howell of Beltsville, MD, and Larry Howell of Fairfax, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Rev. Gerard Schreider, C.S.S.R., will hold a service at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 410 Buckroe Avenue, Hampton. Interment at Hampton University Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to assembly by 10:15 at the funeral home. A final viewing will take place from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Viewing will be today from 3 to 5 p.m. followed by visitation until 7 p.m. at Smith Brothers Funeral Home, 545 E. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Hampton University, Frissell Walker Sr. Scholarship Fund or the American Diabetes Association.
