GEORGE D. WILLIAMS
HAMPTON – George Dewey Williams died Sunday, May 21, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital.

A native of Big Stone Gap, Mr. Williams was a resident of Greensville County for 50 years. Mr. Williams was a 1933 graduate of Hampton University, where he was the first athlete from Hampton University to make the final javeline trials for the 1932 U.S. Olympic team. Mr. Williams still holds the record at Hampton University for the javelin throw.

Mr. Williams retired from the Agricultural Extension Service of Greensville County in 1969 where he was instrumental in starting a clinic for and combatting tuberculosis.

Survivors include his wife, Roselia B. Williams; four daughters, Yvonne W. Young of Hyattsville, Md., Patricia W. Holmes of The Woodlands, Texas, Brenda W. Howell and Pamela W. Adams, both of Hampton; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Hampton University Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Woodrow M. Brown Jr. Burial will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The body will be placed in church at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
