HAROLD E. CARPENTER

HAMPTON – Harold Edward Carpenter, 67, of Hampton, died Monday, July 4, 1994. A Buckroe Beach native, he was a lifelong Hampton resident, where he retired from Fort Monroe post engineers in 1977 after 34 years civil service.

He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. He had been a jump master for the 11th Airborne Division during World War II and later served during the Korean War. He was a member of Army-Navy Lodge #306 A.F. & A.M., Hampton, VFW Post 3219, Phoebus, and was a 50-year member of the Phoebus Volunteer Fire Company.

Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Shirley Hunt Carpenter; two daughters, Janet C. Huff, of Newport News, and Sharon C. Stillwell, of Hampton; a son, Harold E. Carpenter Jr., of Hampton; four sisters, Juanita C. Norman, of Hampton, Charlotte C. Teagle, of Newport News, Alice C. Sorrell and Erma C. Pearce, both of Hampton; and three grandsons.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Oakland Cemetery by the Rev. Howard W. Saunders III. There will be VFW rites at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, after which the family will receive friends until 8:30. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 110 Maycox Ave., Suite 3, Norfolk 23505; or the Phoebus Rescue Squad, S. Hope Street, Hampton 23663; or the Buckroe Rescue Squad, E. Pembroke Avenue, Hampton 23664.
