Harvey Taylor Van Metre, 82, passed away Saturday, May 1, 1999, at his home. A native of Vinton, La., he had been a Peninsula resident since 1963. He retired as a chief engineer on an oil tanker with the Merchant Marine and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, Mariner Masonic Lodge No. 215, Knights of Columbus, and past commander of American Legion Post No. 368.

Mr. Van Metre is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Van Metre; two sons, Frank Grassi of Newport News and Glenn Van Metre of Summit, N.J.; two brothers, Jack Van Metre and Charles T. Van Metre, both of Vinton, La.; four sisters, Betty Hudson of Vinton, La., Alice East and Mary Powell, both of South Carolina, and Noreen Minchew; two grandchildren, Melissa and Amanda Van Wycke; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Frank J. Grassi Jr.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Weymouth Funeral Home, where Masonic rites will be conducted at 7 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5, at St. Jerome Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Majewski officiating. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Expressions of sympathy may be in the form of donations to a favorite charity in Mr. Van Metre’s name.
