HENRY C. CARTER

HAMPTON – Henry Carlton Carter, 68, died Friday, March 1, in Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News.

Mr. Carter was a native of Suffolk and graduated from San Jose State College. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1990 after 20 years and served on the Hampton Police Department for 15 years.

A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Carter was a member of Wythe Presbyterian Church and a monitor at Lodge 197, AF&AM.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie Gray Carter; a daughter, Lenora A. Lewis of Gouvenour, N.Y.; a son, Henry C. Carter Jr. of Hampton; a half-sister, Emily D. Bandlow of Suffolk; a half-brother, J.R. Dixon III of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Monday in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.

A funeral with Masonic rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Parklawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Kenneth E. Boyer.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 618-C J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News 23601; or Zuni Presbyterian Childrens Home, P.O. Box 1358, Hampton 23661.
