ISABEL L. NACHMAN

HAMPTON – Isabel Levy Nachman, 87, died July 28, 1997, at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Born on Nov. 10, 1909, in Norfolk, Mrs. Nachman was the daughter of Celia Reyner Levy and Harry Levy. She was the granddaughter of Joseph Reyner, a founder of the city of Newport News, and Sarah Reyner and the niece of Harry Reyner, a former mayor of Newport News. Isabel was married to Abe Nachman, comptroller of Nachman’s Department Store.

Mrs. Nachman was a resident of the Peninsula for 70 years. A gifted pianist, she graduated from Chicago Musical College. Mrs. Nachman taught piano and performed locally for more than six decades. She was a former president of the Community Concert Association and a member of Temple Sinai and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center.

During her life, she was active in many civic, cultural and religious organizations. She was the president of the Residents Council at Mallory Woods, where she resided.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Abe Nachman; brother, Milton L. Levy; and son-in-law, Charles Ray Storm.

She is survived by two sisters, Doris Sostmann of Philadelphia, Pa., and Gertrude Samet of New York City; two daughters, Charlene Waldman, and her husband, Robert Waldman, of New York City, and Harriet N. Storm of Hampton; four grandchildren, Steven Waldman, and his wife, Susan Waldman, of Denver, Barbara Waldman of New York City, Lisa S. Hogge, and her husband, Brian Hogge of Yorktown, and Laura E. Storm of Newport News; and three great-granddaughters, Spencer Abigail Waldman and Hannah Carlisle Waldman of Denver and Taylor Mackenzie Hogge of Yorktown.

Funeral services will be held at Temple Sinai, 11620 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. with Rabbi Mark Golub officiating. Burial will be in Rosenbaum Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home of Harriet N. Storm, 36 Albany Drive, Hampton, immediately following the funeral, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund of Temple Sinai, or to a favorite charity.

Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
