HAMPTON – James Douglas Church, 65, died Friday, Oct. 5, in Sentara Hampton General Hospital.

A native of Cambridge, Mass., he had lived in Hampton for 42 years. He retired from NASA in 1980 after 36 years of service. He held a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Virgina Tech. and a master’s in aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia. He served as an adjunct professor at George Washington University, Tidewater Center, and at Golden Gate University. He served as an Navy officer during World War II.

He was a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Massanutten Villa Owners Association, American Legion Post No. 48, Hampton, and Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Carrier Church; a daughter, Victoria C. Strider of Falls Church; and a son, Bruce S. Church of Missoula, Mont.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Richard N. Walkley. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the American Heart Association.
