JAMES W. WILKINSON

HAMPTON – James W. Wilkinson, M.D., departed this life to be with his heavenly father on Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at Portsmouth General Hospital.

“Dr. Jimmy” was born in the Garden City section of Hampton on Dec. 8, 1935. He graduated from George P. Phoenix High School and served his community by teaching arithmetic and science at Y.H. Thomas, George Wythe, Thorpe and Hampton Institute (Hampton University).

He served his country by joining the U.S. Army in 1958 and serving to 1961; he trained in Mississippi and was stationed in Germany. In the 1980s, he served his country again by joining the U.S. Army Reserve, where he attained the rank of brigadier general.

“Doc” graduated from Hampton Institute, where he was a mathematics major. He also attended Wesleyan in Connecticut for graduate school. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He furthered his medical education at Harvard Medical School and various seminars and conference around the world. He had been on staff as a physician at Riverside, Hampton General, Whittaker and Newport News General Hospitals. In the 1970s, he started his private practice on Kecoughtan Road, which later moved to Cunningham Drive, and then to 100 Bridge St. in downtown Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cormay G. Wilkinson, who passed on May 9, 1997; parents, Charles Edward and Mary Alice Wilkinson; brother, C.C.; and many aunts and uncles. He is survived by one daughter, Yolanda K. Wilkinson; brothers, Charles, Nelson, Joseph, Vernell, Junius and Drs. Donald and Morris Wilkinson; sisters, Florence Valentine, Pochontas Jones and Grace Carpenter; and a myriad of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Friday, July 11, at Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lawrence Bethel officiating. Burial will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and two hours’ prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions, to establish James W. Wilkinson Medical Scholarship Funds, may be sent to Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church in memory of Dr. James W. Wilkinson. Arrangements entrusted to O.H. Smith & Son Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank his many friends, patients, brothers and sisters in spirit for their support in his last days on this earth.
