JOHN B. COWLES JR.
TOANO – John B. Cowles Jr., 72, lifelong resident of Toano, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at his home. He was served as commonwealth’s attorney for Williamsburg-James City County from 1956 to 1964.
He was a member of the board of directors for the United Virginia Bank from 1957 to 1986. Mr. Cowles was a retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander, serving over 19 years.
He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1947 with a bachelor of arts degree and then obtained his law degree in 1950 from U.Va. as well. Mr. Cowles was a member of the Hickory Neck Episcopal Church in Toano. He was also an avid world traveler.
He is survived by one brother, Richard Carter Cowles, and his wife, Betty, of Toano; a nephew, Richard C. Cowles of Richmond; and a niece, Malinda C. Morse of Newport News.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at the chapel of Bucktrout of Williamsburg Funeral Home with the Rev. James Kellett officiating. Interment will follow in Cowles Family Cemetery in James City County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
