HAMPTON – Retired. Col. John Leslie Crawley Jr., 70, died Sunday, Feb. 4, in Langley Air Force Base Hospital.

Mr. Crawley was a native of Houston and a Peninsula resident for 24 years. He retired in 1966 from the Army after 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding as administrative officer to the chief cost engineering department from 1966 to 1977.

Mr. Crawley was coordinator for the Retired Volunteer Program at the Langley hospital. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 366.

Survivors include his wife, Katharine Ely Champlain Crawley; a daughter, Mary Margaret Crawley of Taipei, Taiwan; a son, John L. Crawley III of Mountain Home AFB, Idaho; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the base chapel. Burial with military honors will be in Parklawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home and requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to John L. Crawley Jr. Memorial Fund c/o 1 TFW/SGAA, Langley AFB, 23665-5300.
