JOHN W. CROSS

POQUOSON – John “Billy” W. Cross, 76, native of Newport News and Poquoson resident for 34 years, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997.

He was a supervisor in X-11 shipfitters department at Newport News Shipbuilding, retiring in 1986 after 43 years of service.

He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Poquoson, where he sang in the church choir and Men’s Chorus for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Mamie Levin Cross; sister, Jane Vaughn; and first wife, Janette Forrest Cross.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Cross; children, Susie Harrell, and her husband, Carey, John Cross Jr. and Patti Roberts, and her husband, John; four grandchildren, Bryan and Michelle Harrell and Bryce and Perry Roberts; three brothers, Joseph S. Cross, Robert Allen Cross and Aubrey E. Cross; three stepchildren, Judy Sklar, James Bias, and his wife, Francy, and Pat Bias; and four stepgrandchildren, Joel and Adam Sklar and Jimmy and Scott Bias.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dick Helveston. Burial be in Weston Cemetery, Poquoson. Visitation will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home.
