JULIA T. CARTER

HAYES – Mrs. Julia T. Carter, widow of J. Stanley Carter, passed away March 7, 1998, at her home, “Bugs Cove.”

She was a member of the First Morning Star Baptist Church, Bena. She was a graduate of Hampton Institute, received a master’s in education from New York University and did post-graduate work at Hampton University and the College of William and Mary in Virginia.

She taught in the Gloucester and Hampton public schools and was principal of the Robert R. Moton Elementary School, Hampton, for 25 years. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, the Coinettes Club and the Hampton and National Education associations. She was also a member of the Hampton Elementary Principals Association.

Survivors include her daughter, Julia C. Nelson of Newport News; her granddaughter, Donna Taylor, and great-grandson, Nicholas Taylor of Raleigh, N.C.; and her sister, Vashti Willis of Hayes.

Funeral services will be held at First Morning Star Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Thursday by the Revs. John L. Amos, pastor, and Professor Josiah Young III of the Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C. The casket will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow services in the Hampton University Cemetery.
