LAWRENCE GEORGE WILKINSON
WILLIAMSBURG – Lawrence George Wilkinson, 82, departed this earthly life on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Riverside Regional Convalescent Center. For his last few years he struggled with Alzheimer’s disease, but we know he is now at rest with his heavenly Father.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1921, in Ithaca, N.Y., to Ingeborg and Lawrence J. Wilkinson. Following his graduation from Ithaca High School and Elmira Business School, Larry served in the U.S. Army for 3 1/2 years. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1949 with a degree in Business.
After serving as an auditor for the New York State Agriculture Department, Larry joined the General Electric Company in Fitchburg, Mass. He became a member of the Traveling Auditor’s staff and part of the Business Management Team at G.E. This meant relocating every few years until his final assignment in Erie, Pa. He retired in Erie, Pa., after 30 years with G.E. He called them “good years.” Larry was active in the local Episcopal Church wherever he lived, frequently serving as Treasurer and Vestry member. After retirement he was particularly active in the Diocese of North Western Pennsylvania, and was honored for his contributions by the Diocese and the Bishop. He moved to Williamsburg in 1994, joined Hickory Neck Church, and again served terms as Treasurer and member of the Vestry.
Larry loved music-especially opera. He had an extensive collection of recordings so he could be continually surrounded by it.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 53 years, Marie; his daughter, Patricia Meszaros and her husband, William, of Williamsburg; his son, Michael Wilkinson, and his wife, Linda, of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Amanda Meszaros and Katherine and Patrick Wilkinson; his sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Carl Stanway of Boynton Beach, Fla.; many loving nieces and nephews, friends from all over, and his dear Hickory Neck Church family of Toano.
The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Nelsen Funeral Home. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Michael Delk officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Williamsburg Branch Office, 263 McLaws Circle, Suite 203, Williamsburg, VA 23185, or to the Hickory Neck Church Building Fund, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano, VA 23168.
