LEVI COLLINS, 103
Levi Collins, 103, born to the late Henry and Lizzie Collins, peacefully entered into eternal rest, Monday, March 20, 2006, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born Feb. 24, 1903, a native of Jasper, Hamilton County, Fla., and was a Peninsula resident for more than 60 years.
He worked for Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company for more than 30 years until his retirement. He returned to his native state of Florida for several years then returned to the Peninsula.
After he returned from Florida, Levi attended Solid Rock Church in Newport News, Va.
Levi was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and a wonderful friend to many.
His memory will be cherished by his sons, Arthur Knox and Larry Collins of Hampton and Levi Collins Jr. of Richmond; daughters, Margaret Knox, Juanita Hill, Frances Duty, Jane Barnes and Anne Collins, all of Hampton; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will begin at noon Saturday, March 25, at Solid Rock Church, 1217 Ivy Ave., Newport News, with Pastor Anthony Proctor officiating. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens. Mr. Collins will lie in state at the church by 9 a.m. Family and friends are asked to assemble by 11 a.m. Saturday at 129 Peachtree Lane, Hampton. Viewing will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
