LUTHER S. CALKINS
HAMPTON – Retired Lt. Col. Luther Secord Calkins, died Thursday, Nov. 30, in his home.
Mr. Calkins, an Army veteran of World War II and the Korea War, was a native of Schenectady, N.Y., and a Peninsula resi dent for 34 years. He was employed in the civil service from 1963 to 1974 at Fort Monroe, where he produced training films for the Army. He retired in 1963 from the Army after 20 years.
He was a member of the Lafayette Gun Club, Peninsula REACT club and the National Rifle Association. He was presented with the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothea L. Calkins; three daughters, Barbara Ann Leber of Philadelphia, Pamela Sue Williams of Hampton and Margaret Elizabeth Jackson of New port News; two sisters, Beryl Pociluyko of Philadelphia and Marjorie Woodbury of St. Petersburg, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home and requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association.
