MACY CARMEL

NEWPORT NEWS – Macy Carmel, 82, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2003. A native of Phoebus, he had been a lifelong Peninsula resident.

Mr. Carmel was a World War II Army veteran having served in Mindanao, Philippines and also in New Guinea. He was in action during the entire scope of his service and received the Bronze Star. He was Past Commander of American Legion Post #48 Fuller-Urlick, Phoebus in 1950 and 1967. He attended schools in Phoebus, graduating from Hampton High School and then attended The University of Virginia. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and attending horse races as hobbies.

Survivors include his sister, Dorothy Balser of Newport News and nephew, Harry Balser of California.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, July 6, in Hebrew Cemetery.

Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
