MALISSIA WHITFIELD WHEELER
NEWPORT NEWS – Mrs. Malissia Whitfield Wheeler passed into eternal life on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003.
She was born in Edgecombe County, N.C., to the late James Garfield Whitfield and Katie Bellamy Whitfield and had been a resident of Newport News for over 60 years.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was a member of New Grafton Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, an usher and with the Missionary Society.
Mrs. Wheeler was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Earnest Wheeler Jr.; a brother, Mr. Walter Whitfield; a sister, Mrs. Cherry Newby; and a grandson, Derek T. Thomas Sr.
A loving, meek and caring person, Mrs. Wheeler leaves to cherish her memory two sons, James (Doris) Wheeler of Newport News, Va., and Earnest (Stephanie) Wheeler of Hampton, Va.; six daughters, Shirley J. Thomas, Mildred D. Wheeler and Evangeline Gale Wheeler, all of Newport News, Va., Doris (Horace) Harmon of Hampton, Va., Jacqueline E. Wheeler of Atlanta, Ga., and Brenda W. Brown of Fort Washington, Md.; two brothers, Cicero Whitfield and Robert (Sarah) Whitfield of Newport News, Va.; three sisters, Lillie M. Lyons of Hampton, Va., Katie (Charles) Handy of W. Hyattsville, Md., and Ethel (George) Williams of Silver Springs, Md. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at New Grafton Baptist Church (Dr. Michael Sumler, Pastor), 4401 Chestnut Avenue in Newport News, Va. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
There will be a viewing from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel (in charge of arrangements).
