MARIA S. CARPENTER
HAMPTON – Maria Shackelford Carpenter, 75, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, after a short illness. Born in Phoebus, she was a lifelong resident of Hampton, where she had worked as a secretary for the Hampton public school system until retiring in 1985.
Mrs. Carpenter was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Newport News.
Survivors include three sons, Robert E. Carpenter Jr. of Hampton, Mark R. Carpenter of Hampton and Courtney M. Carpenter of Yorktown; three sisters, Oneta Cook of Montgomery, Ala., Elizabeth Harris of Hampton and Dorothy Watkins of Ramseur, N.C.; two brothers, Milton Shackelford of Wheaton, Ill., and William Shackelford of Williamsburg; five grandchildren, Eric Carpenter, Robin Lynn Carpenter, John Carpenter, Christopher Carpenter and Brittany Carpenter; and a sister-in-law, Ada Lorene Carpenter.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Isabelle Steilberg. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Hampton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at her home, 35 E. Taylor Ave., Hampton. Friends may pay their respects at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
