NEWPORT NEWS – Martha Bowden Vanderslice, 93, died at Riverside Regional Convalescent Center on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003.

Born in Ivor, Va., she was one of five children born to Joseph R. and Albina H. Bowden. Following her graduation from Newport News High School, she was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. She continued working there after her marriage to Durward Vanderslice in 1935 until the birth of their identical twin sons in June of 1944. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends, bridge, sewing, collecting antiques and fishing and crabbing at the family cottage at Gloucester Point. She was a member of Hilton Presbyterian Church. In her earlier years, she sang in a gospel quartet on a radio program called, “Thirty Golden Moments.”

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Durward Vanderslice; an infant twin son, Robert Wayne Vanderslice; her brother, Ernest Bowden; and three sisters, Emma Cole, Stella Stephenson and Odelle Lyon.

She is survived by a son, C. Warren Vanderslice and wife, Rebecca, of Newark, Del.; three nieces, JoAnn Key and husband, Jim, of Yorktown, Marjorie Stephenson of Portsmouth and Jeannie Perry and husband, Ron, of Portsmouth; three nephews, Douglas Stephenson and wife, Dee, of Chesapeake, Roderick Bowden of Duluth, Ga., and Sterling Bowden and wife, Beverly, of Williamsburg; and 12 great nieces and nephews.

A service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Furman Kenney at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to you local Chapter of the American Red Cross.
