HAMPTON – Martha Washington, 101, died Monday, March 12, at Newport News General Hospital.

A native and lifelong resident of Hampton, she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir and served as a deaconess and missionary mother.

Survivors include a daughter, Bettie Lee Brown of Hampton; a son, James Stewart of Stratford, Conn.; a brother, John Brooks of Hampton; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body can be viewed from noon to 6 p.m. today at Smith Bros. Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The family will assemble at the funeral home at 11 a.m.
