HAMPTON – Mary Hansford “Hansie” Wallace Charles, 91, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003. Born in Fredericksburg, Va., she had been a resident of Hampton since the 1940’s.

Mrs. Charles attended the Virginia State Teachers College and The College of William and Mary.

She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and the St. Anne’s Guild. She was also a member of the Bracket Club, the Colonial Dames, and a former member of the Junior League and the Pembroke Garden Club.

Mrs. Charles was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Charles Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Hansi Haufler of Hampton and Maria Hill of Richmond; son, John Allen Charles III of Hampton; sisters, Margaret Moss of Fredericksburg, Va., and Katherine Silleck of Scarsdale, N.Y.; grandchildren, John A. Charles IV, Molly Edmonds, Robert Pretlow, Susan Hill Pilsner, Katherine Hill; and great-grandchildren, Ella Charles and Walker Charles.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at St. John’s Episcopal Church by the Rev. Donna Mae Siderius. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Hansi Haufler.

The family wishes in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 100 W. Queens Way, Hampton, VA 23669.

The family also wishes to give a special heartfelt thank you to her loving caregivers at the Devonshire Assisted Living.

Arrangements are being provided by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton.
