Mary Jane Cofer, 90, died peacefully on the afternoon of Aug. 14, 2009, at the Gardens of Warwick Forest.

She was born in Saint Joseph, Mo., the only child of Dr. Gordon and Ida Wright. After marriage, during World War II, she moved to the Peninsula, and had been a resident since 1948. She was married to former Judge Wesley R. Cofer Jr., and was the mother of Wesley Randolph Cofer III and the late Glenna Jo Duff. Her son and son-in-law, Charles Duff, currently reside in the Hampton Roads area. After receiving a degree from the College of William and Mary, she taught Music and English for the local public school systems and for Hampton University. She was active in numerous civic organizations.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
