SUFFOLK – Mary Lee Whitaker, 73, died Jan. 1 in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital.

She was founder and operator of Whitaker’s Home for the Aged.

She was a member of the NAACP and Democratic Convention Committee. She was co-founder of St. Mary’s Church of God in Christ, Suffolk, where she was a trustee, head of the women’s department and the Missionary Board and a member of the Adult Choir. She served as district missionary for the Central District of New Frontier Church of God in Christ and was co-chairman of the Badge Committee of the International District Missionaries’ Unit of the Churches of God in Christ Inc.

A native of Nansemond County, she attended Mount Zion School.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Mildred W. Coles of Cleveland, Mrs. Delma W. Bond of Williamston, N.C., and Mrs. Thelma Wynn and Shirley Whitaker, both of Suffolk; two sons, William Whitaker Jr. and Bruce Whitaker, both of Suffolk; four sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Allen and Arletheia Ayers, both of Suffolk, Mrs. Pearl Hinton of Durham, N.C., and Mrs. Lavern Kindrick of Sanford, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Church of God in Christ on Nansemond Parkway. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Garden of Prayer Temple of Church of God in Christ, 812 Washington St., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will be at the home of John Wynn, 2014 Timberlake Drive.
