Nancy Tennis Whittaker, 71, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at home after a long illness. Born in Phoebus, she was a lifelong resident of Hampton, where she retired from Sovran Bank in 1985 after 34 years with the Bank of Phoebus, Virginia National Bank and Sovran.

Preceded in death by her husband, James D. Carey who was missing in action during the Korean War, her infant son, James Jr., and her husband, Sherrell P. Whittaker, Nancy is survived by two sisters, Margaret E. Tennis of Hampton and Grace T. Perkins of Seaford; nine nieces and nephews; her stepdaughter, Dr. Sheryl W. Taylor of Wytheville; eight step-grandchildren and two step- great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oakland Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Derek Pringle. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
