Newton Carter

Newton Carter, a Negro, 1817 Madison Ave., Newport News, died at the residence of his niece, Mrs. Sammie Wilkerson, 531 South St., Hampton, Oct. 23 after a lengthy illness.

He was a retired employee of the Newport News Public Works Department. He was a member of Jobe Lodge 97, Children of Israel, Taborians, Good Samaritans and Buffalo Lodge. He was also a member of the usher board of the Zion Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 pm Sunday with the Rev. A. C. Littlejohn, pastor of Walter’s Temple AME Zion Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Bassette Cemetery, Hampton.

Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Mattie Hollier, Hampton; another niece, Mrs. Mary Freeman, Hampton; two nephews; three grand nieces and three grandnephews. Franklin Funeral Home is in charge.
