HAMPTON – Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Richard Lee Writtenberry, 83, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, in Hampton VA Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Mecklenburg County, he had lived in Hampton Roads since 1934, where he was a member of Phoebus United Methodist Church.

A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1962 after 28 years of military service.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Kourtiche of Williamsburg; three granddaughters, Jenny, Sarah and Hannah; a sister, Rosa Cook of Corapeake, N.C.; a brother, Matthew William Writtenberry of Suffolk; his former wife, Gaynell Writtenberry of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Oakland Cemetery by the Rev. Richard T. Woodall.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Phoebus United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 300 E. Mellen St., Hampton, Va. 23663.

The family expresses appreciation to the staff of Hampton VA Medical Center, Building 148, Side B, for their excellent care and compassion during the time of his illness.
