R.E. Carpenter, 60, Dies; Directed Veterans Office
Robert E. Carpenter, 60, 35 E. Taylor Ave., Hampton, area director of the state Veterans Claims Service, died Monday in Hampton General Hospital after a brief illness.
Carpenter was a regular contributor to the Sunday Daily Press for many years, answering questions concerning eligibility for veterans’ benefits.
Born at Fort Monroe, he was a lifelong Peninsula resident and a member of Phoebus United Methodist Church.
An Army veteran of World War II, he had held the state position for 20 years.
He was commander of American Legion Post 48 in the Phoebus section of Hampton, a member of Hampton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3219 and a member of Monitor Masonic Lodge 197 and the Travelers Protective Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maria Shackelford Carpenter; three sons, Robert E. Carpenter Jr., Mark R. Carpenter and Courtney M. Carpenter, and a brother, Joseph R. Carpenter, all of Hampton; and two grandchildren.
