R. A. Coles
Robert A. Coles, 83, a Negro, of 16 Woodland Road, Hampton, died Wednesday at his home after a long illness. He was employed as a building and maintenance worker at Hampton Institute from 1899 until his retirement in 1947. He had business interests in the Seaside Land Co. and the New Bayshore Hotel Corp.
He is survived by his second wife, Lucy Williams Cole; three sons, Robert A. Coles Jr. of San Francisco, Waldo Coles of Washington, DC and Aubrey Emerson Coles of Hampton; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Venture of Washington; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm today in the Zion Baptist Church, Hampton, with the Rev. J. Dett Marshburn officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Institute Cemetery.
Six members of the Silver Square Masonic Lodge No. 129, whose secretary Mr. Coles was for 30 years, will serve as pallbearers. They are: Elijah Crawford, Ferdinand V. Johnson, Isaiah Perry, Curley Pleasant, Melvin Weeks and Oscar P. Woodhouse.
He was also a member of Elizabeth Lodge No. 3227 of the Odd Fellows of Phoebus and served as its secretary for 28 years.
The body will remain at the Smith Brothers Funeral Home from 10am today until the hour of the funeral.
