Mrs. Sarah Carleton
Hampton – Mrs. Sarah Emma Louise Face Carleton died Friday.
She was a lifelong Peninsula resident, a graduate of Hampton high school and charter member of the D. D. K. sorority.
She graduated from State Teachers College in Harrisonburg, now known as James Madison University, in 1934, and taught at Armstrong Elementary School.
Mrs. Carleton was a spotter for enemy planes during World War II. She also participated with the Red Cross during the 1940’s in the Mobile Transportation Unit.
She was a past president and charter member of the Peninsula Chapter of the Madison College Alumni Association and served as a member of the college’s alumni board for many years. She was charter member of the Hampton Woman’s Club and was honored as a life member in the Hampton Arts Club.
She was the first woman to serve on the Hampton school board after the consolidation of Elizabeth City County and Hampton.
Mrs. Carleton was the widow of Franklin Hall Carleton, president and owner of Houston Printing Co., who died in 1968.
She is survived by a son, Franklin Hall Carleton Jr. of Powhatan; a daughter, Mrs. Sallie Byrd Doyle of Hampton; two grandsons; and four granddaughters.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the St. John’s Episcopal Church or to a favorite charity.
