SHIRLEY GOLDSTEIN NEWMAN

Shirley Goldstein Newman, 82, died on March 14, 2010.

Born in Baltimore, Md., she was a longtime resident of both Newport News and Hampton, Va., and was a graduate of Newport News High School. After 28 years of service, she retired as executive secretary, Federal Civil Service from Langley Air Force Base, in Hampton. Mrs. Newman*s outstanding performance was honored when she received the ‘Langley Woman of the Year’ award. She had been a member of B*nai Israel Synagogue Sisterhood and served as its president for two years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose Nachman Goldstein and Albert Maurice Goldstein; and her sister, Harriet Goldstein Simon. Survivors include her two daughters, Rae N. Shemer of Hampton, and Ilene N. Osmundson and her husband, Gary, of Norfolk, Va.; son Jeffrey I. Newman and his wife, Kathy, of Fairfax, Va.; two grandsons, Aaron Osmundson and his wife, June, and David Newman; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Newman, Sarah Newman, and Laura Osmundson; and one great-granddaughter, Isabella Osmundson.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m., March 17, at the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula, Kecoughtan Road in Hampton, by Rabbi Michael Panitz. Family will be gathered for shiva at the home of Ilene and Gary Osmundson of Norfolk.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association – Hampton Roads Area, 500 Plume Street East, Suite 110, Norfolk, VA 23510; or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Hampton Roads Chapter, 760 Lynnhaven Pkwy., Suite 201, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
