NEWPORT NEWS – On Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at home, an angel came quietly and reached out for the hand of Susie Carter after a brief illness.
A native of Newport News, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Denbigh, where she served faithfully on the Senior Usher Board until she reached emeritus status.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Douglas Carter Sr., her daughter, Annie Mae Banks, and a grandson, Douglas Irving Banks.
She leaves to cherish her memory a son, John “Johnny” Carter Jr. of Newport News; one brother, Paul Holmes, and sister-in-law, Helena Holmes, of Hampton; two sisters, Ethel Holmes of Newport News and Mary Holmes Crisden of Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandsons, Earl Banks Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa., and Jackie A. Banks and Anthony “Tony” Wayne Banks, both of Hampton; one grandchild, Jamar Clark; seven great-grandchildren, Mystery, Damien, Anthony, Zakia, Dwayne, Shana and Ciara; and a special person Susie called “daughter,” Faylette Fox of Newport News.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at First Baptist Church, Denbigh, by the Rev. Ivan T. Harris. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church by 11 a.m. Thursday. Family and friends will assemble at the home of Faylette Fox, 332 Prince Drew Road, by 12:15 p.m.
