Colored man killed

James City County ‘coon hunter meets horrible death

News has been received here of the accidental death of Thomas Cannedy, a well known colored man of James City county, several days ago. Cannedy was out ‘coon hunting. He (illegible) a large ‘coon and in order to capture the trophy found it necessary to cut down a large tree. In felling the tree a large limb from another tree was broken off and struck Cannedy on the head, completely crushing his skull and killing him instantly.

There were several men with Cannedy when the accident that cost him his life occurred.

Cannedy was an old time colored man and much respected by all classes in his neighborhood.

Town Attorney W. H. Power, of Phoebus whose home is in James City county, brought the news of the accident to this section.
