HAYES – Funeral services for Thomas Wintfield Williams, husband of Warren L. Williams, will be held on Thursday, May 29, at Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown, with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Williams was the son of John Davenport Williams and Edith Huffman Williams of Hampton. He was born on May 1, 1916, in Elizabeth City County, graduated from Hampton High School, and received a B.S. degree in physics from Hampden-Sydney College.

He taught high school for a year before attending the University of Virginia on a teaching and research fellowship, and received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics there, after which he became a research scientist at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory in East Pittsburgh, Pa.

He returned to the Peninsula in 1957 for employment at the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics, now the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Hampton.

Subsequently, he worked at Melpar Inc. in Alexandria and spent several years as a branch manager at the Office of Naval Research in Washington, D.C., at the Naval Oceanographic Office and at the Defense Communications Agency. He was technical adviser to the president of Varian Associates in Palo Alto, Calif., with an office in Washington, D.C.

Later he was division chief in the U.S. Navy’s Scientific and Technical Intelligence Center in Suitland, Md., where he retired from government service in 1974, and moved to Seaford in 1975.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Warren Land Williams of Newport News; and by their children, Susan W. Bruce of Haywood, Calif., Thomas W. Williams Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Robert Lewis Williams of Haymarket; as well as a sister, Virginia W. Sheriff of Dare; and two brothers, John D. Williams Jr. of Hampton and E. Daniel Williams of Cleveland, Ohio. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Paul Curatolo and Dana and Nella Felix of California and Catherine, Tommy and Laurie Williams of Honolulu; and a step-granddaughter, Dawn Cody of Hollywood, Calif.
