William A. Conner Sr. died Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Riverside Convalescent Center in Hampton. Born July 31, 1923, in Roanoke Rapids, N. C., to James and Pearl Conner, he graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School, Class of ’42 and immediately joined the Army Air Corps, where he served as a radio operator and waist gunner on B-24s in Italy for the remainder of WWII. In 1952 he moved his family to Hampton and started work at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, where he retired as an electrician in 1988.

The center of his life was his family, his God and his church. He truly loved life, traveling, and cruises. He was a man of great integrity, honesty, and humor. He loved reading, listening to music and was blessed with a photographic memory.

Mr. Conner is survived by Betty, his wife of 58 years; two daughters, Amber Stephenson of Norfolk and the Peninsula, Candace Wingate (Freddie) of Hampton; son, Bill Jr. (Robin) of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Hampton, by the Rev. Donna Mae Siderius. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Church, 100 Queen’s Way, Hampton 23669, or to Animal Aid Society, P.O. Box 1865, Grafton, VA 23692.
