Willie “Sonnie” J. Clayton, 54, departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004. He was born Nov. 12, 1950, in Newport News, Va., to James and Elizabeth Clayton.

Willie was a well-known and well-liked person. He attended Hampton City Schools where he participated in indoor and outdoor track, wrestling and football. He went on to become an All-American football player and a graduate of Duke University. He was a dedicated and faithful member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Willie is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Janet; two daughters, Mary E. Clayton of Hampton and Irene L. Clayton of Newport News; two stepchildren, April O. Golden of Hampton and Terrance Golden of Newport News; three brothers, Charles, Dean and Robert Clayton, all of Hampton; sister, Mary “Cat” Clayton of Hampton; six grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A viewing for Mr. Clayton will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Nicholson-Cummings Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2811 Victoria Blvd., Hampton. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
